Plastic

It is estimated that plastic trash in our oceans (that comesfrom us, here on land) kills approximately 1.5 million marine animals per year.

Twelve Pound Plastic:
A water bottle that I cast out of iron to portray the 'weight' of plastic.

Plastic and other trash I have collected along the beach for future sculptures.

World Wide Anti-Whaling Day

5 November 2010 is Worldwide Anti-Whaling Day

"Protest the illegal whaling of the Japanese Whaling fleet! Cruelty and injustice, intolerance and oppression. Where once these whales had the freedom to move around, to swim and dive at their own leisure; they now have harpoon ships circling around them and factory ships ready to slaughter them."

Knowledge is power. It's important to not turn our backs and pretend issues such as these don't exist or that there's nothing that can be done to end it. It's not simply that these creatures are killed for meat; it's how it's done and that it's done illegally and unsustainably. I don't believe that anything from the ocean should be harvested and treated as an unlimited resource.

All life depends on the health of the Oceans.

Underwater Sculpture

Some of my favorite sculptural pieces are by artist Jason deCaires Taylor. Check out his work here .

A little bit about his work:

"Jason de Caires Taylor’s underwater sculptures create a unique, absorbing and expansive visual seascape. Highlighting natural ecological processes Taylor’s interventions explore the intricate relationships that exist between art and environment. His works become artificial reefs, attracting marine life, while offering the viewer privileged temporal encounters, as the shifting sand of the ocean floor, and the works change from moment to moment."

I love that his pieces interact with their natural surroundings and also that they create artificial reefs. I find these pieces very inspiring and wonderfully amazing.

Check out the Environment tab to see a slide show of the pieces changing over time, it's really neat.

Introduction

This blog is a place for me to share my ideas, other people's ideas, other people's struggles, animal's struggles, the Earth's struggles, my art, other's art, environmental friendly tips, inspiring people, inspiring art but most importantly, hope.

About me: I am an artist. I am a vegan. I am an environmentalist. I am open-minded to other's differences in lifestyles, beliefs and opinions. Above all else, I am a learner. I thrive for more information, ideas and influences. My beliefs are strong and define who I am becoming but I also often evaluate and refine them and I try to be careful not to force my ideas on anyone. However, I believe that sharing is positive and is necessary in provoking positive change.

I do not like to use the word "should". I may think that we all "should" do this or that but how do I know what the universal right answer is. It is my hope that my own views actually rarely show up in this blog, but that this is a place where I can share things I find (websites, other blogs, art, articles etc.) as well as my own art for people to perceive and interept how they will. I hope to explore the other sides of issues and share those also.

Enjoy. This could be interesting.

Cree Indian Proverb

Only when the last tree has died
and the last river been poisoned
and the last fish been caught
will we realise we cannot eat money.
